Overview of Procedure

Dental cysts are growths in the mouth that occur due to infection, disease of the gum tissue or an infection in the pulp chambers of teeth. There are four types of dental, or oral cysts that require cyst removal:

  • A Periapical cyst occurs if tooth decay causes the death of pulp tissues and the infection spreads to the surrounding gum tissue.
  •  A Keratocyst is a cyst that grows inside the jawbone itself and can be difficult to remove and diagnose.
  • Often painless, Dentigerous cysts appear in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth. This type of cyst can cause additional damage by altering the positioning of teeth.
  •  A Primordial cyst is a cyst that develops instead of a tooth, however this type of cyst is extremely rare. Each type of dental cyst is removed in the same way.

The Right Candidates

All dental cysts must be removed to prevent structural damage to the teeth, so any patient with an oral cyst must have this procedure.

Risks and Side Effects

There is a slight risk of infection with any dental procedure and patients will be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection following dental cyst removal

Surgery

The location, type and size of the cyst will determine how the cyst is removed, however after every cyst removal a biopsy of the cyst will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory for analysis. Most cysts are removed while the patient is awake and the area is numbed using local anaesthesia.

The length of time needed for cyst removal will depend on the size of the cyst and the location of the cyst in the mouth. Most oral cysts can be removed in 1 hour.

The mouth is numbed using a local anaesthesia during the cyst removal procedure meaning the patient will feel no pain. Once the cyst has been removed and the swelling has subsided there will be no pain

Recovery

The area around the cyst may be swollen for a couple of days following the cyst removal.

However, the patient can return to work immediately.

Results

Dental cysts may reoccur if dental decay is not thoroughly removed and reinfection of the area occurs.
