Medical Procedure: Eyelid Lift
Medical name: Blepharoplasty
What to Expect from the Eyelid Lift Procedure: This procedure is designed to reduce puffiness or bags under the eyes, and improve the droopy or saggy upper eyelids through a surgical operation. The results of this surgery rejuvenate the skin around the eyes, contributing to a more youthful appearance. This surgical operation is often done in conjunction with a facelift.
Description of Eyelid Lift Surgery: The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. An incision is made either in the crease of the upper eyelid, under the eyelashes of the lower lid, or both. Excess skin and fat is removed, and the muscle around the eye is tightened. Dissolving stitches or removable stitches are used, depending on your doctor’s decisions on which stitches would be most suitable in your case. If surface wrinkles on the eyelids are apparent, the doctor will elect to do laser or chemical resurfacing to minimize the appearance of fine lines. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day. Your surgeon will inform you otherwise.
Good Candidates for this Eyelid Lift Surgery: Healthy individuals who do not have any serious circulatory conditions or medical conditions having to do with the eyes, such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis, cataracts, detached retina, or dry eyes, are suitable for this surgery. Most patients are over the age of 35, as saggy or droopy lids are not very common among youth.
Average Duration of Eyelid Lift Surgery: several hours or longer
Estimated Recovery Time: 1 to 4 weeks
I can return to work within: During the first week, activities that will dry the eyes, such as reading, watching television and using a computer should be avoided. During the first 4 weeks, activities that will increase the blood flow to your eyes, such as sports, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and crying should be avoided. It is recommended by all doctors that you protect your eyes from the sun by wearing dark sunglasses, and if you wear contacts, do not use them for the first 4 weeks.
I should see the complete result of my Eyelid Lift Surgery within: You should see the results of your eyelid lift within 4 weeks. The very fine stitches that are used in the eyelid lift procedure leave a very thin scar that disappears in about 6 months. Since we cannot stop the natural effects of aging, the results of this surgery are not guaranteed permanent, however patients are usually happy with their results for many years, and if in time loose skin on the forehead affects the upper eyelids, they may consider a forehead lift, or a second eyelid lift.
Pain Factor: A local anesthesia with sedatives or general anesthesia will be used during the operation. Your surgeon will determine which is most suitable in your particular situation. Swelling and bruising is to be expected, but will change from patient to patient. To avoid further bruising, the patient should eliminate physical exertion during the recovery process. Cold compresses should be placed on the area around the eye to reduce swelling and bruising. Sleeping with your head elevated will also reduce bruising. Your doctor will administer a pain medication and eye drops for you to use after your operation.
Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Eyelid Lift Surgery: allergic reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, unwanted scarring, temporary sensitivity to light or excessive tearing and blinking, dry eyes
