Medical Procedure: Liposuction
Common Name: lipoplasty What to Expect from Liposuction: Liposuction removes excess fat in specific regions in the body where fat deposits have developed. It enhancing curves and the natural contour of each individual’s unique body type. Liposuction cannot completely change the shape of one’s body, and should not be used as an alternative for dieting. The liposuction techniques used today are less invasive and leave smaller scars. The tube-like instrument used to vacuum out fat deposits has been miniaturized, and therefore incisions are made a lot smaller than ever before. There are many specific procedures that utilize liposuction, such as abdominal etching and buttock reduction. Liposuction is often done in conjunction with a tummy tuck, breast reduction, breast implants, breast lift, thigh lift and buttock lift. However some patients also opt for liposuction in one specific region of the body without the accompaniment of another surgical procedure. Description of Liposuction Procedures: The first step is a detailed consultation with your doctor, who will discuss with you what the procedure entails and which areas on your body need to be concentrated on. After the patient undergoes general or local anesthesia, tiny incisions are made in the specified regions. A cannula (or tiny tube-like instrument) is then used to dislodge and vacuum the fat out of the body. The incisions are then closed with either dissolvable or removable stitches, in which case the patient may be required to return to the hospital to have then stitches removed. This is an outpatient procedure, which means that the patient can return home the same day of the surgery. Good Candidates for Liposuction: Healthy non-smoking individuals who have difficulty getting rid of fat deposits in specific regions of the body. If you are more than 20 pounds overweight, liposuction is not a solution for you. It is important that you notify your doctor if you have had any major operations in the past. The minimum age requirement for this procedure should be 18. Average Duration of Liposuction: 2-4 hours, yet this depends on how much fat is to be removed, and the locations in the body from which they are to be removed. Estimated Recovery Time: 5-7 days I can return to work within: As long as strenuous activity is avoided for at least one full week, the patient should be able to return to work in approximately 3 days. Pain Factor: Patients may go under a local anesthesia with sedatives, but general anesthesia is also an option. Swelling and bruising are to be expected, which typically subsides in about a week.Prescription pain medications should be sufficient enough to relieve pain and soreness after your procedure. Be sure to avoid anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin for several weeks following the procedure. The affected areas may stay numb for about 2 days. A compression garment may be worn for 3 days- 1 week to reduce swelling and support the affected area. Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Liposuction: allergic reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding, infection, soreness, swelling, bruising.
