What is Intrauterine Insemination? Intrauterine Insemination is a method of placing sperm into a woman’s uterus in an attempt to establish pregnancy. It is often done as a first step in treating unexplained infertility. In cases of tubal blockage or damage, poor egg quality or ovarian failure (menopause), intrauterine insemination is not an appropriate treatment.Intrauterine insemination generally occurs in the following way:The woman is prescribed medication to stimulate egg development. At the time of ovulation, the man produces semen by the method of masturbation (other methods of semen collection are available where there are medical or religious reasons The semen is washed in the laboratory, whereby the sperm is and concentrated in a small volume. A speculum is placed in the vagina and the cervical area is gently cleaned. The sperm is placed into the uterus using a catheter.
The intrauterine insemination procedure, if done properly, should seem similar to a pap smear for the woman. There should be little or no discomfort.

Success Rates: The success rates of IUI are generally about 15 - 20 percent per cycle, but a couple’s individual chances of success may be higher or lower, depending on ovarian reserve, sperm count and other factors.
