What is Natural Cycle IVF with ICSI?

Natural Cycle IVF with ICSI utilizes in-vitro fertilization without any fertility medications. Natural Cycle IVF with ICSI uses the bodies natural ovulation process, without the help of follicle-stimulating hormones to boost egg production in a woman’s ovaries. Natural Cycle IVF simply follows a woman’s ovulation cycle, which is monitored with a monthly ultrasound. Just as the egg is about to ripen, it is extracted with a catheter and combined with the sperm in a petri dish, where fertilization will occur. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo is implanted into the womb. In natural cycle IVF only one embryo is transferred to the womb, as opposed to regular IVF in which more than one embyro is transferred at once, thus increasing the chance of pregnancy. As is the case with the conventional IVF procedure, Natural Cycle is also often done in conjunction with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a method in which a single sperm is injected into the center of the cytoplasm of the egg to increase the chances of fertilization. ICSI procedure, only one egg and one sperm is needed to produce one embryo.


Advantages

• No fertility medications are used for stimulation

Disadvantages

• The egg may not succeed in fertilization
• The fertilized egg may not develop into an embryo
