About Crete Fertility Centre

Crete Fertility Centre was established 15 years ago and is one of the very few modern private IVF clinics in Greece.

Its tranquil location in Crete, the largest island in Greece and one of the most popular holiday destinations allows for patients to cope with the anxiety accompanied with the whole process much better.

Crete Fertility’s lab and medical equipment are the newest available in global Assisted Reproductive Technology and are on par with European and American standards for hygiene.

Furthermore, besides Crete Fertility’s medical expertise being of the highest caliber, treatments are more affordable than most European IVF clinics.

FERTILITY LEGISLATION IN GREECE:

The Greek legal framework for assisted reproduction services is one of the most progressive worldwide, establishing Greece (and the Crete Fertility Centre) as an ideal destination for couples from abroad seeking treatment not available in their own country.  Recent Greek legislation assists couples to realize their dream of having a baby, using egg or sperm donation, until the age of 50 for women and without age limit for men, in contrast to other European countries such as France. In addition, there is favorable legislation for couples considering host surrogacy as a treatment option, in contrast to countries such as India.

FERTILITY LEGISLATION IN EU COUNTRIES:

Fertility regulations vary from country to country in the EU. In UK legislation permits single women and gay/ same-sex couples (male and female) parenthood and access to ART technology in both public and private sector. This has led to an increase in demand for these services.

On the other hand, Italy legislated against single and gay parenthood in 2004 also being very restrictive to un-married couples, requiring a comprehensive series of medical examinations, to prove the couple to be infertile. In addition, embryo freezing, sperm donation and egg donation as well as surrogacy are forbidden by law.

FERTILITY LEGISLATION IN NORTH AMERICA:

In the United States of America, medical insurance companies and state law demand that couples follow a lengthy bureaucratic process before agreement to undertake treatment can be reached. Individual State laws differ, for example, in California, state law does not require insurance companies to include fertility treatments in their contracts, while in Connecticut, women over 40, are not covered by insurance companies.

Our 15 years of experience has shown that a lot of couples, motivated by their strong wish to have a baby, while hindered by restrictive legislation in their own country, seek in Third World countries exposing themselves to avoidable risks because of inconsistency and clarity in standards of health care and hygiene as well as failure to conceive. Lack of a robust and transparent ART legal framework has been known to complicate the experience many couples have had abroad in unfamiliar cultures and societies.

ABOUT INFERTILITY

The percentage of couples troubled by infertility is high and unfortunately rising, almost 1 out of 5 couples are experiencing infertility due to various reasons. In Europe, 40% of infertility is attributed to the male partner, 40% to the female partner and 20% to both.

About Crete, Greece

IVF treatment in Crete is of the highest standard and a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city.Tourism

Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Fifteen percent of all arrivals in Greece come through the city of Heraklion (port and airport), while charter journeys to Heraklion last year made up 20% of all charter flights in Greece. Overall, more than two million tourists visited Crete last year, and this increase in tourism is reflected on the number of hotel beds, rising by 53% in the period between 1986 to 1991, when the rest of Greece saw increases of only 25%. Today, the island's tourism infrastructure caters to all tastes, including a very wide range of accommodation; the island's facilities take in large luxury hotels with their complete facilities, swimming pools, sports and recreation, smaller family-owned apartments, camping facilities and others. Visitors reach the island via two international airports in Heraklion and Chania, or by boat to the main ports of Heraklion, Chania, Rethimno, and Agios Nikolaos.

Expatriate EU communities

Crete's mild climate is attracting growing interest from Northern Europeans to have a holiday home or residence on the island. EU citizens have the right to freely buy property and reside with little formality.[11] A growing number of real estate companies cater to mainly British expatriates, followed by German, Dutch, Scandinavian and other European nationalities wishing to own a home in Crete.

The British expatriates are concentrated in the western prefectures of Chania and Rethymno and to a lesser extent in Heraklion and Lasithi. Some 40% of Britons in late 2006 said they were planning to live outside the United Kingdom or retire abroad due to socio-economic changes in the country. One in ten Britons do so already.
