What to See:Founded 1500 years ago, Kiev is the bustling capital of newly independent Ukraine. This city, with a population of 2.8 million people is distinguished for its rich architecture and cultural life.
It is situated on the Dnepr River and boasts architectural monuments that are recognized world treasures. Kiev is the largest cultural, scientific and industrial center of the Ukraine, the place of religious pilgrimage and a very attractive tourist destination. Ukraine has two major international airlines - Ukraine International Airlines and Aerosvit.
Some of the many attractions:
- Hreschatik Street - The main street of the city centre. It is closed to traffic on weekends and full of entertainers and people wandering around. A big happy crowd and very conducive to people watching.
- Pecherska Lavra - The famous cave monastery was founded in the 11th century by St Antoniy. The caves were dug out by priests who lived there as hermits. Nowadays, the caves are venerated by the faithful and tourists who visit the mummified monks, and pilgrims are still allowed access to the underground church there.
- St. Sophia's Cathedral - The oldest remaining church in Kiev. Parts of Sofivskiy date from the 11th century, including it's mosaics and frescoes.
- The Saint Andrew's Church - overlooks the historic Podil neighborhood, situated on a steep hill, it is currently one of four architectural landmarks of the Ukraine, which were put down on the List of Mankind Treasures of Five Continents by the world society.
- Golden Gate of Kiev, which dates back to 1037.
