Medical Procedure: Breast Reduction

What to Expect from a breast reduction:
A patient who has undergone a breast reduction operation can expect to have breasts that are well-balanced with the rest of the body. Shoulder and back pain are the most common complaints from women with large breasts. Breast Reduction Surgery provides a solution that will relieve the shoulders and upper back, as well as lower the risk of acquiring breast cancer.

Description of Breast Reduction Surgery: The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. Incisions are either made around the areola, vertically from the bottom of the breast up to the areola, or horizontally, following the natural contour of the area underneath the breast. Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed and then the nipple and areola is repositioned to a higher location on the breast. Incisions are sewn together with dissolving or removable stitches, in which case it may or may not be required to return to the hospital for a follow-up visit to have them removed. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day, however your doctor may require that you stay overnight in the hospital.

Good Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery: Decisions to go through with this procedure should be postponed until the breasts have fully matured. All healthy, non-smoking people are good candidates for this surgery.

Average Duration of Breast Reduction Surgery: 2-4 hours

Estimated Recovery Time:
The breasts will be taped after the surgery for extra support and for reducing swelling. Your surgeon will inform you as to when the tape may be removed.

I can return to work within: 2-3 weeks

I should see the complete result of my Breast Reduction Surgery within: several weeks to a month.

Pain Factor: Patients are typically under general anesthesia during this procedure, however local anesthesia, or a combination of local anesthesia with sedation are also options. Swelling, bruising and soreness are to be expected. Over-the-counter medications may be used to relieve pain and soreness after the surgery. Your doctor will prescribe you a higher dose pain killer if necessary. Any anti-inflammatory or blood thinning medications, such as aspirin should be avoided. Pain and soreness may reccur for several months, especially during the menstrual cycle.

Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with breast reductions:
Allergic reactions to the anesthesia or tape, bleeding, unwanted scarring, infection, temporary numbness, swelling, bruising, soreness, itchiness, dryness, stiffness, slight discoloration around the breast area (temporary), loss in sensation, over-sensitivity, inability to breast-feed, asymmetry in the breasts.
