Medical Procedure: Buttock Lift
Common Name: butt lift
What to Expect from a Buttock Lift: The objective of this procedure is to improve the contour of the buttock by removing excess skin and lifting the buttock to a higher position, giving it a more youthful and aesthetic appearance.
Description of the Buttock Lift Procedure: The first step is a detailed consulatation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. There are two locations for incisions. If the sagging in the buttock is minimal, an incision may be made in the natal cleft, between the buttock cheeks. If there is a large amount of excess skin sagging in the buttock area, then incisions will be made just above the buttock, and below the lower back. Plastic surgeons are usually very careful about where to place incision lines. The incision is usually made in a place that can be hidden in a swimsuit for minimal visibility. Excess skin is removed and if there is some fat that can be removed, it will most likely be extracted via liposuction. The incisions are then closed up with dissolving or removable stitches, in which case you may or may not have to return to your hospital or clinic for a follow-up visit to have your stitches removed. This procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis, which means that the patient may return home the same day, unless informed otherwise.
Good Candidates for a Buttock Lift: Healthy non-smoking individuals between the ages of 35-65 who are self-conscious or unhappy with the appearance of their drooping buttock areas due to age, weight loss, medication or loose muscle are good candidates for this surgery. Depending on the patient’s desired end results, buttock implants may be chosen instead of the lift to increase volume in a smaller buttock, or liposuction may be chosen instead, or in conjunction with the lift for one with an exceptionally large buttock. Patients who undergo a buttock lift have often undergone other procedures, such as the tummy tuck or thigh lift, however some patients have specifically requested this procedure alone.
Average Duration of Buttock Lift Surgery: several hours (more if liposuction is involved)
Estimated Recovery Time: 2-3 weeks. Sports and physical activities can be resumed 4-6 weeks after the operation.
I can return to work within: 2-3 weeks. The patient will be advised not to sitdown for a week or two following the surgery.
I should see the complete result of my Buttock Lift Surgery within: 2-4 weeks. The results of the buttock lift should last for about 5-7 years, depending on factors such as weight gain and age.
Pain Factor: Patients typically undergo general anesthesia for this procedure. Pain medications will be prescribed to allevtiate further pain after the operation. Swelling, bruising and soreness is to be expected. Moving about will be uncomfortable and possibly very painful for a week or two following the surgery. A compression garment may be given to the patient to wear around the affected area to reduce swelling and to aid the tightened skin in its adherence to the underlying tissue.
Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Buttock Lift Surgery: Allergic reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, unwanted scarring, infection, temporary numbness, soreness, loss of sensation.
