Overview of Procedure
Calf Implants better known as Calf Augmentation, helps improve the contour of the lower leg by creating a suitable balance between the upper and lower leg, and a firm and shapely appearance in people who lack calf muscles or want to enhance the outline in their lower legs. Calf implants are also a great solution for people who are bow-legged. In this case, the implants are placed in the inner portion of the lower leg.
The Right Candidates
Good Candidates for Calf Implants: The minimum age requirement for this procedure should be 18. It is important that the muscles are fully developed before deciding to undergo the calf augmentation operation.
Risks and Side Effects
Potential side effects/risks include Allergic reaction to anaesthesia, shifting of the implant, bleeding, unwanted scarring, infection, temporary numbness, soreness, stiffness.
Surgery
The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. You doctor will determine whether or not your procedure should be outpatient or an inpatient stay. Calf Implant Surgery is a Muscle Augmentation procedure. Incisions are made behind the knees for less visibility. Then pockets are formed for where silicone implants will be placed. Depending on your desired results and the current shape of your lower leg, an implant will be placed either on the inside, the outside, or both sides of each leg, over your pre-existing calf muscle. The incisions are then closed up with dissolving or removable stitches, in which case you may or may not have to return to your hospital or clinic for a follow-up visit to have your stitches removed.

Recovery
Swelling and bruising is to be expected. Walking will be painful for the first couple of days following the surgery. Patients are typically under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia, in which the patient will be sleeping while being operated on, is also an option. Over-the-counter pain medications should be sufficient enough to relieve pain and soreness after your surgery. Be sure to avoid anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin for several weeks following the surgery.
As long as your job does not require strenuous activity, returning to work within about 3 weeks should be safe.
Estimated Recovery Time: 4-6 weeks
Results
You will notice the results of your surgery immediately, but once you have fully healed, and the swelling and bruising has gone down, you should be very happy with the results of the surgery.
