Medical Procedure: Chin Implant Surgery/ Chin Augmentation
Medical name: Genioplasty
What to Expect from Chin Implant Surgery: Chin augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that offers an excellent solution for anyone who has a weak or saggy chin, an under bite, or a larger nose to chin proportion. The chin implant procedure is designed to improve the profile of the face. Rhinoplasty is often accompanied with this procedure to help balance facial features.
Description of Chin Implant Surgery: The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will discuss with you the method he will use to help you achieve your desired end result. There are two methods of anesthesia that may be used, local and general. Implants also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Your surgeon will determine which anesthesia is best for your particular case. You and your surgeon will then carefully select an implant to suit your unique bone structure and desired appearance. During the surgery, a small incision is made either inside your lower lip or in the skin just beneath your chin. The surgeon then creates a pocket over the front of your jawbone for where the implant will be placed. If the incision was made inside your mouth, dissolving stitches that will dissolve in approximately 10 days will most likely be used. If the incision was made beneath your chin, regular stitches will be used, in which case you will return for a follow-up visit to have the stitches removed after about 5-7 days. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day.
Good Candidates for Chin Implant Surgery: Anyone who is unhappy with the natural recession of the chin as they age, and anyone with deficiencies or asymmetries caused by trauma or congenital defects is a good candidate for chin implant surgery. 18 should be the minimum age requirement for this surgery.
Average Duration of Chin Implant Surgery: 1-2 hours
Estimated Recovery Time: Strenuous activity that may jolt or displace the implant(s) is to be avoided for several weeks. Immediately after the surgery a doctor may tape the patient’s chin for extra support. The patient should be fully recovered 3 weeks after the surgery.
I can return to work within: One week. If your job requires strenuous activity, your doctor will request that you rest until you have completely recovered. Otherwise, you should be able to return to work within one week, if your appearance is not a weighing factor.
I should see the complete result of my Chin Implant Surgery within: 3 weeks
Pain Factor: A local anesthesia with sedatives or general anesthesia will be used during the operation. Your surgeon will determine which is most suitable in your particular situation. Swelling and bruising is to be expected, but will change from patient to patient. To avoid further bruising, the patient should eliminate physical exertion during the recovery process. The patient may have difficulty talking or smiling for a few days following the surgery. Cold compresses should be placed on the chin and areas around it to reduce swelling.
Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Chin Implant Surgery: Potential risks and side effects may include slight numbness of the lower lip, infection due to bone transplant (even if the patient has donated his or her own bone), bleeding, undesirable scarring, and allergic reaction to the anesthesia, possibility of the implant shifting, in which case additional surgery to correct the placement would be required. Smoking is often times not allowed several weeks before and several weeks after the chin implant operation as it may interfere with the actual surgery itself and cause complications in the healing process afterwards.
