Overview of Procedure

Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as Male Breast Reduction, is the procedure to reduce the size of the chest in men that have excess fatty or glandular tissue due to hormonal imbalances, medications, or heredity. The male breast reduction not only reduces the size of the chest, but also creates a more aesthetically pleasing contour in the pectoral region.

The Right Candidates

Good Candidates for Male Breast Reduction Surgery: Healthy men of normal weight who are self-conscious or uncomfortable with there chests due to excess glandular tissue or excess fat in the breast area. The age restriction depends on the child's development.

Risks and Side Effects

Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Male Breast Reduction Surgery: Allergic reactions to the anaesthesia, bleeding, swelling, bruising, unwanted scarring, infection, temporary numbness, soreness, slight discolouration around the breast area (temporary), asymmetry.

Surgery

Description of Male Breast Reduction Surgery: The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. Once you are sedated under a general anaesthesia, liposuction will be used to extract fatty tissue from the breast area, and then small incisions will be made around the nipple area and sometimes other areas in the chest, depending on the amount of fat that needs to be extracted. Next, a cannula (a small tube-like instrument) will be used to remove any excess fat or glandular tissue left inside the breast(s). The surgeon will then close the incisions with either dissolving or removable stitches, in which case you may or may not need to return to the hospital or clinic for a follow-up visit to have your stitches removed. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day, however your doctor may require that you stay overnight in the hospital.

Average Duration of Male Breast Reduction Surgery: 2-4 hours
