Overview of Procedure

The objective of the nose-reshaping procedure (rhinoplasty), or commonly known as a 'nose job' is to correct any deformities or defects in the nose that were caused by accidents or trauma, or simply congenital defects. Typically, patients choose to reduce the overall size of the nose, or they may concentrate on only one area, such as the bump on the nasal bridge or the tip. Chin Implant Surgery is very commonly done in conjunction with this procedure.

The Right Candidates

18 should be the minimum age requirement for this procedure. Anyone who has a crooked or asymmetrical nose due to an accident or injury, or those who would like to correct the proportion of their nose to better compliment the rest of their facial features may choose to undergo this procedure.

Risks and Side Effects

Potential Side Effects/Risks associated with Nose Surgery: allergic reaction to the anesthesia, recurring nosebleeds, difficulty breathing, change in tone of voice, reduced sense of smell, unwanted scarring, asymmetrical looking nose (rare)

Surgery

The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will determine the best method that will achieve your desired end results. Incisions are made either inside the nose or outside the nose, on the vertical strip of skin separating the nostrils. The soft tissue that covers the nose is gently raised providing access for reshaping of the nose. Often, cartilage is used from the septum or less commonly, from the ear or rib, to reshape the nose. After the structure of the nose is reshaped and sculpted to a shape complimentary to the patients other facial features, layers of skin are re-surfaced over the nose and the incisions are closed using either a splint or stitches. This procedure is outpatient, which means you can return home the same day.

Average Duration of Nose Surgery: 1-3 hours

Recovery

Patients have the choice between a local and a general anesthesia. Your doctor will help determine which will be better in your particular situation. Bruising and swelling is to be expected. A cold compress can be used to reduce these two symptoms. Over-the-counter medications should be sufficient enough to reduce any pain or discomfort you may experience throughout the healing process.

Strenuous activity is to be avoided for about 3 weeks; however your nose should be almost fully recovered within 10 days.

If your job does not require that you bend or lift heavy objects, you should be able to return to work within a week.

Results

You should see the full results of your surgery within one year because it takes the nose a longer time to heal compared to other facial features, however just weeks after the surgery you will notice and be happy with your appearance.
