What is Laser Lypolysis?

Laser Lipolysis (laserlipolisi) commonly referred to as smartlipo, is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction, which removes stubborn fat deposits in specific regions in the body through a gradual process. The process entails liquefying the fat in the body, allowing it to drain throughout the course of a few weeks to a month.

A Good Candidate for Laser Lypolysis

Good candidates are healthy, non-smoking individuals who have difficulty getting rid of fat deposits in specific regions of the body. If you are more than 20 pounds overweight, liposuction is not a solution for you. It is important that you notify your doctor if you have had any major operations in the past.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not undergo this procedure. The minimum age requirement for this procedure should be 18 years of age.

Laser Lypolysis Procedure

The first step is a detailed consultation with your doctor, who will discuss the method(s) that will be used to achieve the best results. Small incisions will be made around the regions that will be concentrated on. A cannula, or tube-like instrument, will be inserted, and fat will be liquefied with a small laser located inside the cannula.

Once the fat is loosened and liquefied, it will drain out of the small incisions throughout the course of a few weeks. This procedure is less invasive because fat is not vacuumed out, like the traditional liposuction.

Average Duration of the Laser Lipolysis Treatment: approximately 2 hours, yet this will depend on how much fat is to be removed, and the locations in the body from which they are to be removed.

Risks and Side Effects of Laser Lypolysis

Potential risks and side effects associated with Laser Lipolysis are allergic reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding underneath the skin, and infection.

Recovery from Laser Lypolysis

Mild swelling and bruising are to be expected, which will typically subside in about a week. Patients are usually under a local anesthesia so that they may comfortably and painlessly remain awake during the procedure. Antibiotics are administered to prevent infection after the procedure.

A compression garment may be worn around the affected area(s) for 1-2 days to reduce swelling and support the affected area. The estimated recovery time is 5-7 days.

The patient should be able to return to work the same day, but strenuous activity must be avoided for 1-2 weeks.

Results of Laser Lypolysis

The patient should see the results gradually within the course of a few weeks to a month; however this may vary with each individual.
