He specializes in Gastric Banding and Intragastric Balloon, which are both minimally invasive weight loss procedures meant to achieve the most ideal weight and maintain it by living a healthy lifestyle and exercising. Obesity is one of the most significant health problems negatively affecting the modern world, typically originating from lifestyle and chronic illnesses. Gastric Banding, is a surgical procedure, also known as an adjustable gastric lap band, refers to an adjustable band that is placed around the top part of the stomach. The band can be adjusted by adding or removing a saline solution that either tightens or loosens the band. The procedure dramatically reduces the capacity of the stomach to hold food and the passage of food through the stomach is slowed down. This reduces feelings of hunger so you feel full faster and after eating less. It is known as the lap band because it is performed using a technique called laparoscopic, or “key- hole”, surgery. What makes this procedure special is the fact that it is an adjustable and reversible gastric bypass. You eat less and don’t feel hungry. A gastric balloon may be ideal for you if you are looking for a temporary weight loss solution. With the assistance of an endoscope, a thin small tube with a deflated silicone balloon is inserted into the patient’s mouth, down the throat and gullet and into the stomach. The deflated silicone balloon at the end of the tube is filled with saline and then left in the stomach. Although you will feel full after eating, it is important to remember that you must get into the habit of eating smaller portions than you are used to. Many patients who have undergone the gastric balloon do not lose the amount of weight expected because they maintain the habit of eating large portions even if they are full. Will I experience any discomfort from the Intra Gastric Balloon? You will feel slight discomfort for the next few days after the procedure, however after that, the only thing you will feel is fullness even after eating smaller portions. How long will the Intra Gastric Balloon stay in my stomach? The balloon can only stay in the stomach for a 6 month period. Once this period is up, if your doctor thinks that you need to have it in for a longer period of time, you will still need to have it replaced because the acid in the stomach may cause it to corrode or deflate. What happens if I get pregnant? As soon as you find out you are pregnant or even feel morning sickness, you should go to your doctor and have the balloon deflated and removed. Having the balloon in your stomach while you are pregnant may affect your nutrient intake and can be very harmful to the fetus.
