Obesity Solutions - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Coskun is one of the most reputable bariatric surgeons in Turkey and has been performing weight loss surgery for the last 9 years.

He specializes in Gastric Banding and Intragastric Balloon, which are both minimally invasive weight loss procedures meant to achieve the most ideal weight and maintain it by living a healthy lifestyle and exercising.

Obesity is one of the most significant health problems negatively affecting the modern world, typically originating from lifestyle and chronic illnesses.

The evaluation of obesity as a medical/health issue, as opposed to simply being cosmetic is very important. The target is not only loosing weight, but also maintaining a healthy lifestyle after achieving the most ideal weight for you.

In recent years, with advanced technology, the ideal weight is able to be achieved and provides a long-term solution for individuals who suffer from morbid obesity.

Surgery for morbid obesity is the most long-term and effective treatment method, not only for obesity itself, but also for Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease resulting from fatty tissue rather than alcohol, sleep apnea and various metabolic diseases.

Dr. Halil Coskun performs out of two different hospitals, Medical Park Hospital Group, a JCI accredited hospital approximately 5.5 kilometres from Istanbul International Ataturk Airport and Bayek Levent, a boutique hospital in Levent, Istanbul's most posh business district.

Gastric Banding,  is a surgical procedure, also known as an adjustable gastric lap band, refers to an adjustable band that is placed around the top part of the stomach.

The band can be adjusted by adding or removing a saline solution that either tightens or loosens the band. The procedure dramatically reduces the capacity of the stomach to hold food and the passage of food through the stomach is slowed down.

This reduces feelings of hunger so you feel full faster and after eating less. It is known as the lap band because it is performed using a technique called laparoscopic, or “key- hole”, surgery.  What makes this procedure special is the fact that it is an adjustable and reversible gastric bypass.

How much weight will I lose after gastric banding?

How much weight you lose actually depends on your diet and how strict you are after the band. Some people lose all their excess weight, but others may only lose a little by consuming very high calorie foods and drinks.

How will I maintain my weight after the gastric banding procedure?

Maintaining a healthy weight after lap band surgery is easy as long as you try and match your caloric intake to your caloric expenditure. The amount of calories your body requires will diminish as you lose weight. Once your caloric intake catches up with our caloric expenditure, you will stop losing weight.

When and how will the band be adjusted?

You and your doctor will decide when the band should be adjusted for the first time.
The band is adjusted by injecting or removing a saline solution from the self-sealing access port located right under your skin. This may seem very easy and painless because it is done with a fine needle, however you must always go to a doctor to have it adjusted. Only a doctor can know for sure how much adjusting your band needs and it is usually done with the assistance of a fluoroscopy.

How long does the band stay in?

The band stays in forever. It will only be removed if you experience complications.

What happens if my band has to be removed because of complications?

Once the band is removed, you will gain all your weight back.

What complications are associated with gastric banding?
  • Erosion of the band (may happen if there are too many sutures or if the band is too tight at the time of implantation),
  • Dialation of the esophogus (the esophogus may enlarge over time due to improper placement of the band around the junction of the esophogus and stomach or the band being too tight)
  • Infection from the silicone rubber

What advantages does the Lap Band or gastric banding system have over other weight loss surgery procedures?
  • Minimally invasive
  • Least amount of risks compared to other weight loss surgeries
  • The band is adjustable
  • Process is reversable
  • Less time in the hospital
  • Quicker recovery time

A gastric balloon procedure is a non-surgical treatment to help you lose weight. It works by making you feel full after eating only a little and reduces your stomach’s capacity to hold food.

You eat less and don’t feel hungry. A gastric balloon may be ideal for you if you are looking for a temporary weight loss solution.

A gastric balloon will help you to lose weight but for the best weight loss results, it needs to be combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

How much weight will I lose after the Intra Gastric Balloon is put in?

How much weight you lose will depend on how well you follow the program given to you to help you maintain a healthy diet.

Who should have an Intra Gastric balloon?

  • Individuals over 18 years of age, who are clinically obese or overweight.
  • People who have already tried traditional exercise and diet regimes, but are still not able to lose weight.
  • If you have any physical conditions related to your heart or lungs, then we highly recommend that you speak to your GP first before proceeding with any kind of weight loss surgery.

What does the Intra Gastric balloon procedure entail?

This non-invasive medical procedure does not require that patients be put under a general anesthesia. A patient undergoing the gastric balloon procedure will be given a throat spray that has a numbing effect and an optional sedative.

With the assistance of an endoscope, a thin small tube with a deflated silicone balloon is inserted into the patient’s mouth, down the throat and gullet and into the stomach. The deflated silicone balloon at the end of the tube is filled with saline and then left in the stomach.

What complications are associated with the Intra Gastric balloon procedure?

  • Reaction to the silicone balloon
  • Less weight loss than expected

How will I maintain my weight after the procedure?

The food you eat will still travel through your digestive system in the normal way, however the balloon limits the amount of food your stomach can hold, therefore making you feel full even after eating small portions.

Although you will feel full after eating, it is important to remember that you must get into the habit of eating smaller portions than you are used to. Many patients who have undergone the gastric balloon do not lose the amount of weight expected because they maintain the habit of eating large portions even if they are full.

Will I experience any discomfort from the Intra Gastric Balloon?

You will feel slight discomfort for the next few days after the procedure, however after that, the only thing you will feel is fullness even after eating smaller portions.

How long will the Intra Gastric Balloon stay in my stomach?

The balloon can only stay in the stomach for a 6 month period. Once this period is up, if your doctor thinks that you need to have it in for a longer period of time, you will still need to have it replaced because the acid in the stomach may cause it to corrode or deflate.

What happens if I get pregnant?

As soon as you find out you are pregnant or even feel morning sickness, you should go to your doctor and have the balloon deflated and removed. Having the balloon in your stomach while you are pregnant may affect your nutrient intake and can be very harmful to the fetus.
