What is Inverted Nipple Correction?

The objective of the Inverted Nipple (inverted nipple repair or nipple inversion surgery) is a procedure used to correct inverted nipples so that they protrude out rather than in. Areola reduction, breast reduction, or breast lift surgery may be accompanied by this procedure.

A Good Candidate for Inverted Nipple Correction

Good Candidates for Inverted Nipple Correction are women with inverted nipples due to congenital deformities, breast feeding, or prolonged use of medication. Patients that are self-conscious or unhappy with the appearance of the nipple are good candidates for this “corrective” aesthetic surgery. The minimum age requirement for this procedure is 18 years of age.

Inverted Nipple Correction Procedure

The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will explain and discuss with you the best method to help you achieve your desired results. After undergoing general anesthesia, incisions are made just under the nipple on the areola. The nipple is gently lifted, but remains attached to the areola to preserve sensation and future ability to breast feed. A suture is placed around the outer lining of the nipple, and the “purse-string” technique is employed.

The size of the suture depends on the degree of nipple inversion. After the procedure, the nipple is supported with a sombrero splint and sutures for one week. Scarring is barely visible due to the circular direction in which the sutures are placed around the nipple. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day that the surgery is performed.
