What is Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)?
Platysmaplasty, the neck lift procedure aims at removing excess skin and fat from the neck area. As people age, the skin on their neck tends to hang or sag. This procedure can be done alone, or accompanied by a face lift.
A Good Candidate for Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)
Any healthy individual over the age of 40, who desires to remove excess skin in the neck area due to age or weight loss is a good candidate for neck lift surgery.
Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty) Procedure
The first step is a detailed consultation with your surgeon, who will discuss with you the different treatment options and combinations available. After an anesthesia is administered, an incision will be made under your chin or behind your ears where the skin will be gently raised.
Your surgeon will tighten the muscles underlying the soft tissue in the neck and remove any excess skin or fat by liposuction or cutting it out. The skin is resurfaced on the neck and incisions are closed with dissolvable or removable stitches. This procedure is outpatient, which means that the patient can return home the same day.

Risks and Side Effects of Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)
Some risks include allergic reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding, infection, temporary numbness, facial nerve injury, and infection.
Recovery from Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)
Patients are typically under general anesthesia during this procedure. Bruising and swelling is to be expected, and can be partially eliminated with a cold compress. The patient should avoid any anti-inflammatory medications or medications that thin the blood, such as aspirin. It takes approximately two weeks to fully recover from the neck lift operation.
Patients should avoid strenuous activity for nearly 10 days, but it should be safe to return to work in 5 days.
